Speakers: Monica Schell, Harborview Abuse & Trauma Center
In our society, fat people are discriminated against and looked down upon simply due to the size of their bodies. Fatphobia (the fear and hatred of fat people) is present in the medical field, the fashion industry, across levels of employment, education, interpersonal relationships, and is rooted in racism and anti-Blackness. This continuous dehumanization contributes to fat people being subjected to sexual violence. In this presentation we will explore these intersections and offer ways to unlearn fatphobic ideals and create more inclusive spaces for people of all body types. This session will use evidence-based models to address better ways to prevent and respond to sexual assault and discrimination against the fat community.
This session is part of the Prevention Track sponsored by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.
