Vanessa Sapien is the Mental Health Program Director for Just Detention International. She provides training and technical assistance for corrections staff, advocates, and service providers on how to keep prisoners safe from sexual violence. A certified domestic violence and rape crisis counselor, she has many years of experience helping survivors, and provides direct services to incarcerated survivors of sexual abuse. A lifelong activist for people with disabilities, Vanessa has worked for multiple non-profit agencies, while consulting with legal firms on how best to deliver culturally sound justice to the Disability community. Vanessa holds a Master’s Degree in both Clinical Psychology and Professional Clinical Counseling. She serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President of Operations for the FBI Citizens Academy of Los Angeles, and is an Adjunct Professor for her Alma Mater Azusa Pacific University teaching Cultural Diversity in the Department of Graduate Psychology.
