Surviving the Mic (StM) is a collaborative organization dedicated to creating brave and affirming creative spaces for survivors of trauma. Founded in 2014 by Nikki Patin, StM began as a writing workshop series for women and femme poets of African descent who are sexual assault survivors. StM has evolved over time, expanding from a workshop series to a multifaceted literary, performance, and social practice organization that serves all survivors through Black Feminist lens and perspective of justice and equity. This session will summarize the StM methodology, break down the process of the survivor-led evolution of StM, share writing prompts to help participants draft their own pieces, and give participants the opportunity to both share with and listen to their peers and the StM team.
